Jaga Jazzist One-Armed Bandit

Jaga_Jazzist-One_Armed_Bandit_b Every now and then I listen to talk radio and hear a back ground song that captures my interest but I can never get the name of the artist. Well as luck would have it, I continued to listen to the station and found an awesome band. Jaga Jazzist.

“Jaga Jazzist have become something of a musical phenomenon in Norway since they started 15 years ago. Not only is this 9 piece instrumental band regarded as one of the most exciting and innovative in Norway, the members are all involved in other musical projects and have in one way or another contributed to almost every significant recording to come out of that part of the world in the last few years. It has been this strong involvement with different projects, and different musical styles and sounds which is the key to the unique sound of Jaga Jazzist. With no boundaries and an arsenal that includes trumpet, trombone, electric guitars, bass, tuba, bass clarinet, saxes, keyboards, vibraphone and a rack of electronics, Jaga Jazzist create timeless music. Melodic, hypnotizing, delicate and subtle.”

I immediately went out and purchased two of their albums. I was not disappointed. I really enjoy their sound. There is almost a video game vibe to their music that speaks to the gamer in me. Check out more of Jaga Jazzist on the official website.

Square-Enix unveils Final Fantasy Type-0 for the PlayStation® Portable

clip_image002Square Enix is working on a new Final Fantasy for the PSP. From the initial screens and trailers, it looks like it will be amazing. Square Enix has released some great games for the PSP such as Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 and the Final Fantasy IV The Complete Collection. The battle system for this game is a new evolution of the "ATB Kai" system created by Takatsugu Nakazawa for Final Fantasy X-2, and later refined in Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII. However, Type-0′s combat is group-based. Actions are mapped directly to the face buttons. It also supports both Ad-hoc and Infrastructure multiplayer for up to three players. I am a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series and Type 0 looks very impressive. Here is a trailer for what could be a great title for the PSP.

Final Fantasy will be release on two UMDs. This is a first for PSP owners. According to an interview with Hajime Tabata, the game will ship in two UMDs because he does not want to cut any content. He wanted to keep the cut scenes’ visual quality on par with PlayStation 3 titles. The Japanese release for Final Fantasy Type-0 is scheduled for Summer 2011. Let’s hope the US release will be shortly after.

E3 is taking place now. Let me know what you think of the up-coming game releases.

From Dust Till Dawn

FromDustTitle_01Have you ever wanted to play God? Have you ever wanted to harness the powers of Mother Nature? Ubisoft may have your answer in one of their newest God game projects called From Dust. In collaborative effort with Eric Chahi, they seem to bring you a gameplay that hasn’t been seen since Populous, I believe. At least it seems to mimic that type of gameplay. Either way, it looks really interesting. Now if you don’t know who Eric Chahi is, he is the game designer that created the hit Out of This World. No, not the TV show with the teenage girl alien/human halfbreed (I feel old, now), but the video game from the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis days.

project_dust3_tsFrom Dust is a God-game where you play as a force of nature that helps to care for a Tribe that loses their memories who are on their own quest to recover their memories. Your role is to basically keep the natural world in harmony and preventing nature from destroying the tribe you look after. Looking at the design of the images and the videos, I can see the resemblance between what was done on Out of This World and From Dust. Though, I also see some influence from say Ico… Maybe a smidge. All I can say from the Tech Demo video, I have a feeling this game will create a cult following. Will it be a popular smash hit? From how the public received game gems like Shadows of the Colossus and Out of This World, it is not likely this game will create a huge buzz unless Ubisoft has some strong marketing behind it.

When will you usually have the opportunity to control nature? When will you ever have the opportunity to play God? I think this will be a game worth checking out. Knowing some people, I’m sure we’ll know what happens when the tribe is burned by lava, drowned or buried under sand and earth. Try not to be such a horrible God, okay.

Check out the Developer Tech Demo.

I’m sure we’ll see more after this year’s E3.

Resident Evil Outbreak Then and Now

Resident-Evil-Outbreak-989-8 As Capcom celebrates 15 years of survivor horror; one game has been the subject of great debate. Resident Evil Outbreak what a game that was a head of its time. Release in 03/31/04, Resident Evil Outbreak was received with mixed Reviews. At the time, the game showed the absolute best in graphics on the PlayStation 2. The soundtrack is one of the best I have heard for a video game. The game takes place between resident evil 2 and Resident evil 3 Nemesis. It was a spin off title so the events of the game did not affect the series. Players controlled one of 8 characters with their own abilities. The on-line component of the game is where I believe, the game was ahead of its time. 4 players must escape by working together. The game had an internal communication systems that worked in theory but ultimately hurt the only game play. There were also some game play issues that made the game hard. I believe that if the game was re-released now, it would have a much greater impact on the series. Here is a look that the amazing intro of Resident Evil Outbreak.

Resident Evil Outbreak has a sequel with some improvements but follows the same design of the first. With on-line gaming being a popular as it is, I think this game could be one of the greatest online experiences out there. Capcom has announced Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City which is schedule to be release in the fourth quarter of 2011. Outbreak fans are very interested in this game however; it does not play in the same manner as Outbreak. I for one am hoping Capcom revisit this series. I would like to know what you think. Please feel free to comment on this post and I hope you enjoy the Resident Evil 15th Anniversary Trailer

End of The Line presents “Tron Legacy: Aerosol Mural”

From the folks who brought you The Watchmen Graffiti Mural and Beat Your Soul Aerosol Murals, End of The Line has a new video from Vimeo of their latest work, Tron Legacy: Aerosol Mural.

Tron Legacy : Aerosol Mural from End of the line on Vimeo.

This was filmed in December 2010 and January 2011 in a warehouse in Shoreditch with the exterior shots taken from the rooftops of East London. This is a pretty impressive project, I will say for sure. These time-lapse videos of works of art are always enjoyable to look at. Besides the mural itself, the folks who filmed this put a nice touch by adding the Tron Legacy Soundtrack songs by Daft Punk.

On a side note, I will not recommend going out to see the Tron Legacy movie right away, but I highly recommend picking up the Tron Legacy soundtrack. Daft Punk did a fantastic job.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game

image

Every so often, a game comes along that breaks back the nostalgia of why you love gaming. That game for me is Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game. Based on the popular graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, you play the roles of Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers, Kim Pines, and Steven Stills. Each character has their own fighting style and abilities. You must fight your way through 7 unique stages to defeat the League of Evil Exes. This game brings me back to a time where games where simple yet you can have a lot time with it. Play with up to 3 addition players in this free for all battle reminiscing of Double Dragon or River City Ransom.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is designed with 16 bit graphics which may feel dated by today’s standard but as I began to play the game; it fits the tone just right. The music and sounds are also retro almost as if they used midi to create it. The replay value is high as each character can be leveled up.

I highly recommend checking out Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game. For me, this game embodies everything I love about gaming. It brings be back to a time when with gaming was all about gameplay and not graphics and high production costs.
